GREAT NIGHT OUT AT THE DENTAL BALL!!!

Hey all,
what a FAN....TAS....TIC night!!! One not to be forgotten and surely the next dental balls can only get better!!!! :) Well done to Kazza for organising the hotel room at the Liberty Towers! Excellent views to say the least!! If I had to critique the dental ball I would say that they served excellent food, good wine, the beer was average (west end draught i believe), excellent company, and good music! Well done to the organisers from the AUDSS! The cost was well worth it. To finish my critique....the only thing they could do better next time is serve better beer!!! and perhaps put the 'door prize' ticket under my seat hehe ;)
Cheers to 12 of the BOH 1 class that attended, hope to see more people there next year! :)

7 day extension on the developmental psychology assignment

Hey all,
most of you should be well aware of the 7 day extension that Katrina P has kindly given us. I sent an email to all BOH1 students on Friday the 21st to notify you on the extension and the possibility of having Friday free if we agree to having the last 2 DHS Psychology lectures on Tuesday 4th of September (provided that this offer still stands when I confirm class preference with Katrina on Monday). For anyone that may have not received the email I sent, a request for a short extension on on the psych. assignment was made on behalf of the class as a few student expressed some concern re. the due date. Katrina gladly extended this due date for the entire class so just add 7 days on top of the original assignment due date, and if you get it done before hand then.....bonus! On behalf of the class I expressed our appreciation for this extension. Get stuck into it and enjoy the useful knowledge! :)

The Digestive system

just found a site that reads pretty easy and covers the digestive system pretty comprehensively. Probably contains way more than we need to know, but it's a pretty good read.

Issues Raised at the Curriculum Committee Meeting

For student interest I have cut and pasted the issues that were raised on behalf of the BOH1 class from the Curriculum Meeting Minutes WEDNESDAY 1ST AUGUST 2007.
Note: THESE ARE ONLY MEETING NOTES AND NO UPDATE ON FURTHER DISCUSSION OF THE TOPICS IS AVAILABLE YET. i WILL KEEP YOU POSTED ON ANY FEED BACK.

BOH Student representative spoke to the committee on problems that had been communicated to him from other students;

(1) Not enough emphasis on Human Biology
(2) Request for more frequent assessments and hence less topics covered in each assessment
(3) Recognition of Prior Learning – request for this be considered
(4) Methods of how student participation marks were being presented
(5) Students were complaining about the marking schemes being used
(6) There were complaints concerning one lecturer who students had difficulty understanding
(7) BOH Bridging to BDS – what monitoring processes are in place for current intake?
(8) Can BOH students “fill” places in BDS program where students have dropped out?

Neville pointed out that many of these concerns should be raised via the Staff-Student Liaison Committee in the first instance. Tracey indicated that issues relevant to other committees would be directed to the relevant committee, eg, Year committee or Selection Committee.

Dental Ball :)

Hey all,
anyone interested in good night out at the Dental Ball should let me know so we can arrange a table or two. I hear it is a great night out! 3 course meal, beverages included (beer, wine, champas) and not to forget........... the dance floor hehe.... bust a few moves!
The cost is $85 per person unless audss memeber = $75 Date I will have to check again soz. Early Sept I believe. Tickets can be purchased down in the basement from any audss rep at lunch time. Should be a sell out and we should purchase tickets over the next week I'm told, but the sooner u let me know if you are going then we may be able to book tables.

Cheers!

100th post of the year

Yay! Hundredth Post!!

Comical Dentistry Clips

Hey everyone,
In the same vein as Stuart's link to The Chaser's dentistry clip I'm posting a couple of links of my own:

Little Shop of Horrors - Dentist Song:
Steve Martin's dark song from the movie 'Little Shop of Horrors'. I was shown this by a friend when I told him what I was studying. (This clip may be responsible for a whole generation of dental phobias!)

DRINKs NIGHT

Hi everyone,
An email has been sent to everone with the details for Saturday 7th July. i need to know names by Tuesday or Wednesday next week at the latest so that i can have names & total numbers. i have organised party prices for the drinks $3-$4 off normal prices. Wrist bands will be given out but but no more than the numbers i give them, so late notice misses out. Get back to me asap or if you want my phone number contact me at student email address (nicole.perrin) and i will give it to you then.
Thanks

Oh Dear

Not sure what happened then but the date for drinks is 7th July

DRINKS

Hi All,
Just letting everyone know next Saturday night from 8ish onwards some of us are going for drinks in North Adelaide starting at the Caledonian Hotel at the top of O'Connell Street followed by the Oxford. I encourage everyone to stop and have at least one drink.
Hope to see you all there for a bit of fun

My Concerns

Dear All

I agree with both Stu's and Anh's idea, however I am concerned about you all putting very personal contact details on a public space. Is it perhaps a more sensible idea to forward your details to the class reps who could then make a database that can be sent to everyone in the class. The wiki was meant to be a collaborative document that everyone contributed to for the purpose of becoming familiar with wikis, so that the human bio assessment later on in the year was more manageable. It was an opportunity for us to explore the meaning of social learning and our value systems... wasn't that successful though. I am happy to pick it up again with you all if you wish to have a bit of fun over the break.

Thoughts???

have a great break

Sophie

student contact list

Hey everyone!

On the wikispaces thing that Sophie's started ages ago is a space where you can enter your contact details (if you want) so that members of the class can contact you when they need; like for assignments or something. I think it's a really good idea - good one, Stu.

Here's the website to log in:

BLOGGERS..............UNITE!!!!!

Gee Wizz,
I knew something was missing from my life, I was having withdrawals from not blogging lately.
Congrats to everyone on making it this far through the year I say!! Study hard for the exams!! This first year really is going quick!! Before we know it, we'l be slip streaming into 2nd year!! That said, I better start studying right now! Good luck to all!!
Also, I somewhat feel the urge to mention my thoughts on how good a class we are... I have thoroughly enjoyed the course so far, and having the company of such great people is a massive bonus! When the exams are over, we should all congregate somewhere to celebrate!
If you are interested in this idea, drop your thoughts in comments i.e. any suggestions on Rendezvous. Comment for the sake of resuscitating the blog and strengthening our BOH Community! ;)
Cheers

Stu's Party

Hi all.

Just wanted to take this opportunity to thank Stewie on organising his 18th birthday houseparty. I'm sure i speak for all who managed to find the time to attend when i say that it was a great night, with plenty of good food, drink and music.

I also think Stu deserves kudos for inviting the entire BOH class, a daunting prospect!

The BOH party benchmark has been set... ;)

Pub Crawl

Those who went on the pub crawl on Friday night, how much fun did we have? But i am sure all of us are suffering today. It was a wicked night, it was great to be given the opportunity to meet other students in BDS and BOH. The BDS students were so friendly and encouraging of us, they put a lot of things into perspective. One of the thing the 3rd, 4th & 5th said to us was to only look at the week ahead and deal with that, rather than look weeks ahead and get over whelmed, focus on the one week and complete everything you have to then start looking at the weeks ahead. They were such a great bunch of people and it was great to have bonding time with those of BOH 1 that we wouldn't normally get to spend much time with. We had a great night and next time would encourage others to join us. Not just for the social aspect but for the feedback and guidance we were given. Hope you all enjoy the rest of your weekend. And those who were on the pub crawl remember about those bears.......

=) + =(

Hey guys,
I know that after todays bio session we were all pretty shell shocke about next week's test and having little time to revise for it. In short term this is a hard hurdle to overcome but if you think in the long run...when it comes to the exam, we will have less to study for hence making it easier to at least pass. We should be thanking both sophie and Cathy for splitting the tested criteria hence making it easier for us. I hope everyone has a great time at stuarts birthday and that we get a bit of much needed study done =) + =(.

Ps for those who are unable to come to the dental pubcrawl, do not worry the people that are goin from our class will do our class proud..by drinking twice as much hahahahahaha Have a great weekend...

HAPPY 18th BIRTHDAY TO 'L' LAURA AND STU!!

Exam Blues

Hey all,
the approaching exams are no doubt starting to play on everyone's mind by now, and I am certainly no exception. I think if u are getting a bit stressed thinking about the exams then it is not necessarily a bad thing. I think that a little worry is probably a healthy sign. However, I do not recommend stressing out and having a fit. Hopefully it means that u are at least thinking about doing some serious revision soon (if u have not already started) - especially on the areas that u know are hazy. Therefore, I think a little pre exam stress may actually work in favour (if used to its advantage) - rather being a defence mechanism against failing, a sign of your desire and will to succeed.

Well, true or not, I felt like sharing a thought that helps me deal with the stress in the back of my mind. It works for me, and I know feeling the pinch early is better than later because there is still plenty of time to revise and prepare! So listen to that voice inside your head and study, Study, STUDY!!! This is what I keep telling myself all along to phsyc myself up for revision!

So on that note, I will definitely put the study cap on this weekend and at get revising on some biology and some other selected areas of study. I thought I would also give the naturopath Ginkgo Biloba 2000 a go to see if it really helps with memory and enhances concentration as it claims. I researched some studies found on Pub Med and there seems to be links to suggest that it may work, but no real evidence yet. Anyway I thought I would give it a go and in time I will let u know my findings. Who knows, maybe I will get out of bed easier - LOL!

Hi everyone, welcome back ! I hope you all enjoyed the break !
I tried to, however my 1 year old kept me from the sleep ins I had been dreaming about !
He believes 6am is a great time to start the day ! (I beg to differ)
It was nice to be home though.
If anyone is keen to study on Fridays in our 3 hour break let me know I'd love a study buddy !
I actually missed Uni ! And its great to be back and catching up with everyone.

To the other Mum's in our class especially "CONGRATULATIONS" I think we are doing really well to jungle uni and family life. And if any of you ever need any one to chat to I'm alway's happy to. I know it can get very dificult at times with all the added stress that comes with being a Mum.
And Happy Mothers Day, lets hope we can take the day of !

Student Rep Meeting Review

Hey all,
not a great deal report on here. Susan and myself did attend a student representative meeting on Tuesday 24th at lunch time so i just thought i would update u all. The meeting had rep's from BDS 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th and fifth years but unfortunately Susan and myself were the only rep's attending in representation of BOH. If 2nd and third year BOH Reps were present there would most likely be more to report on. Apparently the BOH 2nd years were in clinical session. Not sure about the 3rd year reps though. I hope the next meeting will be a convenient time for all to attend.

Anyways, we raised a few topics and they were : Poor seating in the lab (occ health and safety), suggestion for another room to be made available for PBL sessions for quieter environment to optimize learning outcomes. There was also discussion of the need to have more lecturers in clinical practice. This discussion arising from the BDS students saying that they waste a great deal of time just waiting for lecturers to check the stages of their clinical work in the dental chair. I spoke on behalf of the BOH 2nd years agreeing with the need for more lecturers in clinical for better time management (BOH 2nd years spoke of this while doing our check ups at the beginning of the year and the issue was quite obvious really). Not a great deal else to report on, or that I can specifically remember at the moment.
Oh yes, of course - there was a free lunch including freshly made rolls with various fillings, a fruit platter and orange juice.
Hopefully the next rep meeting will be more productive with the attendance of BOH 2nd and 3rd years (providing the meeting is arranged to suit their rosters).

Semester 1b timetable

**edited 22/4/07 2.45pm to include the later start for dental and health science on Fridays

Hey guys, I've updated the timetable to semester 1b and posted on the class wiki, you can view it at http://bohone.wikispaces.com/1btimetable
It has all the old colours and can be viewed as a .bmp (I tried it as a jpg, but the text went a bit blurry) as well as the excel document (which contains the timetable in all the colours as well as the key for all the outlandish acronyms I invented to save space).

Sushi Train and Movie (300) Tuesday 17th

All BOH 1st years are welcome to come and join a fun night out on the town. Starting with a Sushi feast at the Gouger street 'Sushi Train' 630pm on Tuesday the 17th, and followed by a movie at the Academy Cinema. The chosen movie '300' - (due to popular demand) is scheduled to be screened at the Academy Theater 8:45 pm.

Ok, maybe its not the ideal 'chick flick' as there is a bit of violence and blood and guts so i hear, but an intelligent female source disclosed that there is a lot of muscle in the movie which made the film overall about an 8/10 LOL!!

Anyways, hope to see you out to have a good night!! The more the merrier!! Sushi will probably cost around $13 max for most people unless u intend on eating a horse......or a sea horse should i say hehe (not a sea lion). mmmmmm Sea horse (drooling) ok its getting late, forgive me.
The movie cost is $9 - thanks to Tight Tuesday.... Movie Munchies will obviously cost u extra!!

I look forward to seeing u there!!

Have a Safe and Happy Easter Holiday!

Well done everyone!! We have made it through semester 1A - put that one behind us!

I hope u all have a very nice holiday. I am planning to do a few activities in the hollies like bowling(there are vouchers in the back of the uni diary), hiking (at Morialta Falls) waterfall gully was the other option but an intelligence source said that the recent rains have collapsed a few of the hiking tracks so it may be closed, i will check after the long week end.
Also on the cards was the idea of going out for a bite to eat at the Gouger street sushi bar one night and then catching a movie on the big screen. I was thinking 300 but i am open to suggestions so if anyone is interested in any of these activities then leave a comment and keep ur eye on this blog over the next few days for venue dates and times. If any particular day, night, time suits u best then please confirm.
Cheers to u all! Keep it safe and don't eat too much on Easter day, u know i will hehe

PS.. the pic is of Morialta Falls - i think- or Waterfall Gully... hmmm its one of them 2 (maybe u can tell me ;)
PPS. keep up the revision :)

Why we learn IC...

I suppose this article kinda explains why they try to drill all the infection control stuff into us so early :P. I haven't read a news story that was so funny since Keith Richards announced to the media that he had snorted his fathers ashes. You really gotta hand it to the Brits for supplying us with a near endless supply of comic material :D.

Partay! great idea..

Hi guys,
I have decided that as class rep I should finally do something..
As some of you may already know, next Thursday (yes the last day of uni before holidays) is NAOMI'S 18th birthday!!!
So it would be great if we could make it out that night to help her celebrate the big one eight and the fact that we've all made it through semester 1a.
Would be fantastic, tell me what you think we can try to figure something out, and remember public holiday next day, can sleep in as long as we want..
Susan :)

Human Biology (Keith's Teeth)

Hi,

I was just wondering if the people in the Violet Group could meet up this Monday coming up, i was hoping if we could have a meeting. I did consider massaging all you guys but i don't have every ones numbers. I will mention this today or Friday. We all have to present the Keith's teeth on Tuesday so we really need to get organised. The sooner we all do this the better

Gen Stud Evaluation Criteria Links

A few posts have been made about confusion with the General Studies Assignment 1: 'Evaluation and Review of Recources'. My personal confusion came from the link in MyUni/Year Handbook ( http//www.library .adelaide.edu.au/search/web.html ) not working properly.

Stuart and Luke found that the following link below should be used instead (thanks guys!)
http://www.adelaide.edu.au/library/guide/web/webhelp.html#evaln

Earlier in the week I sent an email to Sue on this issue she confirmed that the links to the 'New Mexico State University' and 'University of California Los Angeles' Article review sites are
http://lib.nmsu.edu/instruction/eval.html
http://www.library.ucla.edu/biomed/tutorials/searchweb.html#evaluate

The first and second comments for this post should be the email I sent to Sue and her reply. I hope this helps anyone who was unsure how to layout their report.
After contact with Sue she said that its up to us how we choose to elevated the articles. The aim of the assignment is for us to read the assignment information and interpret it how we see fit. It was explained to me that its not high school anymore & this is part of learning. Sorry this doesn't really help.

General Studies Assignment

Stuart and i have found that the original link that was given to us in the assignment details : http//www.library .adelaide.edu.au/search/web.html seems to not be linking with any evaluation criteria.
Since, i have done a thorough search through the Uni. of Adelaide library web site and found that this site is more than likely the site in which we should have been directed.

Please click the link evaluation criteria

At the moment Stu and I are planning to evaluate each of the articles separately and then compare them. we will only do the draft and do the reading until we're sure. Follow the format of the formative assessment.

But remember...... use your assessment guide and BOH 1st year handbook

PS this is a guide only... Stu and i reserve the right to be wrong and just thought this may help get us started on the draft while waiting for confirmation from Sue Gardner

BOH I Calendar

I just wanted to acknowledge the importance of the calendar that Stuart has set up. Currently he seems to be the manager of this tool, but as he has stated before, it is a collaborative activity and I want to encourage you all to contribute to it, as it may be a huge task for one person to be managing on their own. Just tracking your discussions is seems to be helping to clarify confusion such as the infection control assignment and the general studies assignment issues that have been discussed on this blog. Please view and help Stuart keep it updated on a weekly or monthly basis. Perhaps we can assign a team of students that are responsible for tracking the learning and assessment requirements collaboratively. Again, it is everyone's responsibilty but if we assign tasks to individuals then there is a coordinated fashion in which things can get done in a consultative manner. Remember that authority is shared in an effective learning community. Anyone up for the Job????? No limit to numbers. We can even give this team a name: eg the BOH I calendar team. Please share your thoughts.

Hi All, there seems to be some confusion with the general studies assignment. I have sent Sue an email asking her to clarify what we are required to do with the articles. I will let you know when i do

General Studies- Course Material Listings???

Hi guys,

Is anyone finding the General Studies (Course Material Listings) a bit confusing???

I noticed that the lecture postings and semester case study assignment 1 was for 2006??? as well as the evidence based dentistry 1 is for 2006???

Is there anyway of updating the content so that only material presented THIS YEAR is displayed?, I just wasted so much paper... :(

Puzzled...Karen

DHS DLP NOISE REDUCTION

Below is an email i have sent to Katrina regarding the issue of noise distraction in the DHS DLP sessions. It was nice to receive a prompt reply from Katrina to gain insight and understanding in relation to this matter. The reply is posted in the comments section of this post.

Hello Katrina,

As one of the BOH 1st year class representatives i thought i would express a concern that is negatively impacting the extent of possible learning outcomes in Friday's DLP sessions. It has come to my attention that two out of the three DHS DLP groups studying on Fridays are suffering from a bit of noise distraction from each other whilst participating in group discussions. It certainly does get noisy at the rear of the class where 2 groups (one of which i participate in) practically sit within meters of each other having group discussions. It seems a bit of a waste when we try to teach the rest of the group our 'hard researched' weekly topics only to be distracted by noise. The front of the room is no doubt a bit quieter being the only group down that end. So perhaps one extra small room (if available & close by) would solve the noise distraction levels and benefit our learning outcomes.
Is there any chance of this happening?
Thank you

Luke

Assignments

For anyone that is interested I found the ADA website to have lots of helpful journal articles and links to up-to-date information regarding infection control and radiography. Its easy to navigate as well. So if you are interested the web address is http://www.ada.org.au/

Hope people find it useful

P.S if anyone has some good websites for the biology assignment, post them up!!

Hello

Luke helped me get into this blog finally!!! Im excited... that is all

Biology tutors

For those of you who wish to have some biology tuition, I have lined up some third year students who look to be very interested in helping. I will let you know the names of these students as soon as I have had a chance to catch up with them first and brief them on what would be required. In the meantime could I have some indication of who would be interested. Perhaps our efficient reps could coordinate the numbers for me. Watch this space !!!

The Great FunkyStu !!!!

I have just returned from Sydney and am thrilled at the posts and support network that this blog has initiated. It has gone beyond my imagination and I want to thank you all for it. Many many thanks to Stewart who has come up with excellent strategies that have added such a valuable element to this blog and everyone's learning experiences. The latest addition of the calendar is a very worthwhile device to help each other track requirements and manage time effectively. Luke, many thanks to you as well for having adopted such an inclusive leadership role in the management of this site. And to everyone else who have embraced these peer group initiatives so readily, making everyone's efforts so worthwhile. Go BOH I class of 2007!!!! You are all true collaborators !!!

Calendar

There have been a few calls to start a BOH class calendar in which we can add important events, due dates etc. I have set up a Google calendar to facilitate this:

Everyone should be able to view it, but to edit you need to both have a google account (the same as what you need to contribute to this blog) as well as be added to the permissions list. As of now I have added everyone's university email to this list (in the form of firstname.lastname@adelaide.edu.au). If your email is different to this, or you used a different email to sign up to this blog, just email me your correct one and I'll add you when I get the chance (I check my email accounts daily).

This should be pretty awesome if it is kept up to date with everything, but I certainly can't do that on my own, so everyone: log on and start adding important BOH dates!
BTW, I think the calendar is best viewed in the month view (either click on the month tab at the top, or click on the name of the month on the left hand side)
Hey champs, sorry it took me so long to get onto the blog.. i hope you all can forgive me...

How to Blog

G’day fellow bloggers! I thought it was about time a made a contribution to this thing. Just in case anyone is still unsure about how to contribute to the blog, there are two separate ways:

1) You can create a subject post (like the one you are reading now) by clicking on ‘new post’ in the top right corner of this page. Note: it will only appear if you have signed in. Sign in by clicking on the 'sign in' link in the top right corner also.

2) If you wish to make a comment on the subject of an existing post, i.e. Stuart’s great little timetable, then click on the word ‘comments’ below the relevant subject post. On the right of the screen will be a textbox to type your comment and on the left will be any comments already posted.

Please feel free to try commenting under this post if you wish. Maybe you would like to tell us all what you thought of this week’s clinic session, or how you feel about not brushing your teeth Monday-Wednesday next week so that your operator has some plaque to prod about in clinic!... please make a comment… don’t leave me hanging like this… ;)

DLP

Hi guys, I'm finally on!!! Very exciting. Hope everyone is handling the new work load OK. I am beginning to freak out a bit. But a few long nights will hopefully help keep me afloat. Thought the DLP sessions today and last week were a really good way of learning. What did everyone else think? It feels like we are all just sharing our knowledge rather that sitting and memorising. Have a good weekend

I TAKE IT BACK!!!

Was was i sayign about keeping on top of all the work as it comes....well after today..hmmmmm got me thinking a bit...actually makes me depressed haha ohhh literally received 3 assignments today and along with all the noting and the weekly tasks that we need to do.......wheres the social life fit in to all of this......lets hope things turn out well. anyways got to keep working on the little presentation for tomorow so i will see everyone nice and early in the morning.

Genetics

A few people said that they had a bit of trouble with the genetics lecture today and I thought that a few integral parts were skipped through and/or required a bit of assumed knowledge. Just to reaffirm all the stuff for myself I wrote up what I thought were the integral parts of genetics (hopefully in a well structured and systematic order). I tried to keep is as simple as possible, and it's only about a page of text(plus images). Bibliography-wise I used my yr12 bio text book, wikipedia and encarta dictionary (images have their source site as a hyperlink).
Anyway, I hope it helps :)

genetics.doc

Oh, and if there's any mistakes, please point them out in the comments asap.

Howdy guys and thanks!

I have finally made it onto the blog thanks to the help of the sweet and very smart amy 'purple' chen- thank you for giving up some of your lunch to help a technologically disadvantaged person like myself. Also I wanted to thank all those, and especially Meg, for singing happy birthday to me on Wednesday. I must say that i was not in the best mood and you were all able to raise my happiness level and my embarassment level a little bit- so thanks. can't wait til its your bday Meg!
See ya guys- well done on all the hard work thus far. the weekend is just around the corner.......phew!

General Studies

I just wanted to let everyone know that there are two general studies assignments coming up but for the people that have no idea what I'm talking about don't stress. In the BOH hand book it just states that there are two assignments (a research one and a draft of one) due next week but apart from that there has not been any further information. I have spoken to a few people including Clinton the general studies/lab/clinic tutor guy who told me that we would be informed about the assignments this week, hopefully with a bit of an extension. I just wanted to let the people know that might have been stressing. Don't worry :-) Hope everyone is coping well and is excited about clinic tomorrow i can't wait.

Alex

Hey guys,
hows everyone coping so far??? feels like the work is slowly piling on.....lets try keep on top of it early for example the infection control assignment, start gathering information now to make it easier in the long run. anyways its best i go now but get excited for our second clinic session tomorow...see you all

got HERE

hey everyone im finally on, hope all are well and keeping up with everything. its a bit over whelming but we will get there. stick together!!!
Hey, just seeing if this works; first time posting. Nici's right, consider others wanting to learn and just be quiet and ask questions that you know will benefit others than yourself. Gotta finish my lunch now. Later
Hi,
I think that we all need to be mindful that during lectures everybody is at different levels on knowledge and understanding. We need to be respectful of this. Taking and laughing during lecture is distracting for others. I know that we have all been guilty of this at one point or another. Put yourself in others shoes and think how you would feel. Just something for you to consider.
Cheers
hi

Biology Blues

Hi Everyone
having worked with first year students in Hum Bio for a long time now, I can recognise that some of you are feeling a little out of your comfort zone. Keep asking questions in class, and keep up your reading - and re-reading. Sometimes what is confusing the first time around, is clearer when you read it for the 2nd or 3rd time. Make notes or draw diagrams as you go. I find reading the abstract or review of the chapter is a good way of revising.
I noticed in the tute this morning that some of you more experience in this field than others - try and find an experienced person in the group to have a coffee with (you may have to buy the coffee, but it will be worth it) and have a list of questions ready to go through with them.
Sites such as these are a good way of keeping the communication going.
Keep in touch
Cathy
hello is this working

Rachel

hello, just checking if this works cause Ive tried about three times and I dont seem to be getting anywhere???

Hi and bye!!

Hi all,
I had a browse at the BOH 1 blog this morning (I had hoped it would be quick!) and whilst it's been really interesting reading all your thoughts and comments, I have decided it's too time consuming for me to manage the MyUni sites for the different streams/year levels/courses that I teach in (a Uni requirement that I must fulfil) and respond/add comments to the blog (optional for me!).
So I won't be participating in any discussions at this stage... if you have any queries or comments specific to D&HSc, please email directly to me.

However I have taken on board comments about noting updates to MyUni and will undertake to place a notice on Announcements to highlight whenever changes/additions are made to D&HSc.

I hope this helps a little - I can see that the process of communicating and transferring info is a very time consuming business for everyone!!!

All the best
Katrina

Who is Studious?

As we do not have a class member named 'Studious', I am curious and would like to know who this mystery person is. Must solve the X file! Anyone??

Starting out..

Hi guys..
Ok so I've finally logged in! (what an example I'm setting already)
Just wanted to let you all know to please approach Luke and/or I and have a chat if you are having any difficulties.
We want to represent 1st year BOH to the best of our ability so please help us by always letting us know what's going on, good or bad..
A few people have already spoken to me about troubles they're having with biology, I know there are lots of people in our course that haven't done much, if any, biology before, so if you do feel that way I'm sure lots of others do as well.
Let's try to get on top of the problem before it becomes a major issue, even if it means extra study! And remember to utilise students in the course with a biology background, particularly tertiary transfer and school leavers who seem to have done a bit more..
Well i hope you all have a good long weekend, personally I'll be playing softball and working, not much partying :(
And of course I'll be studying!
Oh and I have a myspace at www.myspace.com/susanclift and msn at susanclift@hotmail.com (very original aren't I?)
See you all bright and early Tuesday morning!
Susan :) (sorry it ended up so long, unintentional)

Timetable

**Updated 10/3 at 5.15 (Teusday->Tuesday)
**Updated 9/3 at 3.03 (fixed the link - it should now download just by clicking it)
**Updated 9/3 at 2.55 (implemented Sophie's corrections)

This is kind of a spin off from the post Nikki started, but I think it will be easier to manage edits and updates if it has it's own post (as you cannon edit comments).

Just to fill everyone in, a lot of us are having a bit of trouble with the time table that we were given on day one, mainly because of all the alterations we've been given and the rather static nature of physical paper (one piece can only handle so many edits). The (hopeful) solution is to maintain a regularly updated one online.

Just to let everybody know how I arrived at this (probably-not-so-correct) timetable, I entered in all of the times from the original timetable (that we were given on our very first day) and then attempted to change all the classes to those published in our student handbook (on the assumption that it's more recent date of publication would make it more correct). There were a few clashes, including Monday's clinical practice time (as published in the handbook) completely overlapping the following general studies class. I have since made a few alterations based on the recommendations of our our esteemed male class rep and have also decided to remover the multi-colour support whilst still in the editing phase (its just too much extra work, and if people really want the different colours they can use the font colour button on the format bar of excel)

Anyway I'm having quite a bit of trouble ironing out the creases, so any posts regarding corrections would be greatly appreciated (I'll try and add them on an almost daily basis)

Anyway here is the link:

sem1att.xls

**Disclaimer: please note that, while every attempt has been made to get this correct, it is more likely than not that I screwed it up badly. At the moment I believe the start times for each day to be accurate, as well as the finishing times for Monday-Thursday.

Congratulations!

Hey hey!
Just wanna say congratulations to both Susan and Luke for making class reps.
No pressure guys! ;) Haha!

Hey

Hi everyone!
.....errrr....ummm....
Goodbye!

Finally!

After some serious issues with my computer and memory loss, i finally remembered how to long in to my blog and post a comment! *YAY!*

Our course so far has ben heaps of fun! It's also been incredibly daunting! Im not sure about anyone else, but my timetable appears very confusing! I'm not sure if it is possible, but are we able to get our hands on an ammended timetable with all the additions and changes fixed up on it? My pencil marks are getting very messy!

Also, if anyone is having any trobules with the bio or chem in Human Biology, I still have my books from year 12 which I'm happy for people to borrow or have a look at. They give a very simple explaination of whats going on and build up from there. (I have some workbooks too so you can test yourself along the way) Let me know and I'll be happy to bring them in.

Well, I'll see you all tomorrow, and if I forget, have a fantastic long weekend! - STAY HEALTHY!

Sweat may spread Hepatitis B virus

I found this article an interesting read...Maybe you will too.
It was on The Age newspaper yesterday.

Sweat may spread hepatitis B virus

Findings from a study of Olympic wrestlers indicate that hepatitis B virus is found in the sweat of infected individuals, and so sweating might be a way that the virus could be passed between participants in contact sports.

Bleeding wounds and mucous membranes have been implicated in hepatitis B transmission during contact sports, but until now no study had looked to see if sweat carries the virus.

Dr S Bereket-Yucel, from Celal Bayar University in Izmir, Turkey, tested for DNA of the hepatitis B virus in blood and sweat samples from 70 male Olympic wrestlers.

The results indicated that nine (13 per cent) of the wrestlers had the hepatitis B virus in their blood.

However, these were deemed "occult" infections because no antibodies to the virus were detected in any of the wrestlers, according to the investigators' report ahead of print by the British Journal of Sports Medicine.

In eight of the nine participants whose blood tested positive, DNA for hepatitis B was also detected in sweat.

Based on these results, "Evidence is emerging that the incidence of occult HBV in Olympic wrestling is higher than expected and that transmission of HBV may also occur through sweat," the researcher concludes.

"The advice of sports organisations about HBV testing should be changed," they recommend, "making it obligatory for all participants involved in contact sports and playing under adult rules to be vaccinated against hepatitis B."

Basement Party 1

I just wanted to say that the freshers welcome basement party was a pretty damn good show and I thought it was an excellent opportunity to chillax after what felt like quite a long week. Just to let everyone know what they missed out on (how noble of me :p), there was an 80's theme, so 80's music, 80's posters and the 5th years (and only the 5th years) dressed up in 80's garb. There was also free beers, mixes, softies, pizzas and free entry for 1st years (being a freshers welcome and all).

Anyway I reckon it would be great if more of us could rock up for the next basement party. It would be a great chance to socialise with each other and strengthen our BOH Learning Community.

I know the timing for this one was less than optimal (4hours after the conclusion of our last lecture), but for future parties we should all be able walk straight there after general studies.
