GREAT NIGHT OUT AT THE DENTAL BALL!!!
Hey all,
what a FAN....TAS....TIC night!!! One not to be forgotten and surely the next dental balls can only get better!!!! :) Well done to Kazza for organising the hotel room at the Liberty Towers! Excellent views to say the least!! If I had to critique the dental ball I would say that they served excellent food, good wine, the beer was average (west end draught i believe), excellent company, and good music! Well done to the organisers from the AUDSS! The cost was well worth it. To finish my critique....the only thing they could do better next time is serve better beer!!! and perhaps put the 'door prize' ticket under my seat hehe ;)
Cheers to 12 of the BOH 1 class that attended, hope to see more people there next year! :)

7 day extension on the developmental psychology assignment
most of you should be well aware of the 7 day extension that Katrina P has kindly given us. I sent an email to all BOH1 students on Friday the 21st to notify you on the extension and the possibility of having Friday free if we agree to having the last 2 DHS Psychology lectures on Tuesday 4th of September (provided that this offer still stands when I confirm class preference with Katrina on Monday). For anyone that may have not received the email I sent, a request for a short extension on on the psych. assignment was made on behalf of the class as a few student expressed some concern re. the due date. Katrina gladly extended this due date for the entire class so just add 7 days on top of the original assignment due date, and if you get it done before hand then.....bonus! On behalf of the class I expressed our appreciation for this extension. Get stuck into it and enjoy the useful knowledge! :)

Issues Raised at the Curriculum Committee Meeting
Note: THESE ARE ONLY MEETING NOTES AND NO UPDATE ON FURTHER DISCUSSION OF THE TOPICS IS AVAILABLE YET. i WILL KEEP YOU POSTED ON ANY FEED BACK.
BOH Student representative spoke to the committee on problems that had been communicated to him from other students;
(1) Not enough emphasis on Human Biology
(2) Request for more frequent assessments and hence less topics covered in each assessment
(3) Recognition of Prior Learning – request for this be considered
(4) Methods of how student participation marks were being presented
(5) Students were complaining about the marking schemes being used
(6) There were complaints concerning one lecturer who students had difficulty understanding
(7) BOH Bridging to BDS – what monitoring processes are in place for current intake?
(8) Can BOH students “fill” places in BDS program where students have dropped out?

Dental Ball :)
anyone interested in good night out at the Dental Ball should let me know so we can arrange a table or two. I hear it is a great night out! 3 course meal, beverages included (beer, wine, champas) and not to forget........... the dance floor hehe.... bust a few moves!
The cost is $85 per person unless audss memeber = $75 Date I will have to check again soz. Early Sept I believe. Tickets can be purchased down in the basement from any audss rep at lunch time. Should be a sell out and we should purchase tickets over the next week I'm told, but the sooner u let me know if you are going then we may be able to book tables.
Cheers!

100th post of the year
I think we've done a pretty damn good job as a group to get to the 100th post mark. I hope everyone is enjoying the hollies and I hope to see everyone at the drinks night this Sat that Nici has been so great to organize.

In the same vein as Stuart's link to The Chaser's dentistry clip I'm posting a couple of links of my own:

Hope to see you all there for a bit of fun

My Concerns
I agree with both Stu's and Anh's idea, however I am concerned about you all putting very personal contact details on a public space. Is it perhaps a more sensible idea to forward your details to the class reps who could then make a database that can be sent to everyone in the class. The wiki was meant to be a collaborative document that everyone contributed to for the purpose of becoming familiar with wikis, so that the human bio assessment later on in the year was more manageable. It was an opportunity for us to explore the meaning of social learning and our value systems... wasn't that successful though. I am happy to pick it up again with you all if you wish to have a bit of fun over the break.
Thoughts???
have a great break
Sophie
student contact list
On the wikispaces thing that Sophie's started ages ago is a space where you can enter your contact details (if you want) so that members of the class can contact you when they need; like for assignments or something. I think it's a really good idea - good one, Stu.
Here's the website to log in:

BLOGGERS..............UNITE!!!!!
I knew something was missing from my life, I was having withdrawals from not blogging lately.
Congrats to everyone on making it this far through the year I say!! Study hard for the exams!! This first year really is going quick!! Before we know it, we'l be slip streaming into 2nd year!! That said, I better start studying right now! Good luck to all!!
Also, I somewhat feel the urge to mention my thoughts on how good a class we are... I have thoroughly enjoyed the course so far, and having the company of such great people is a massive bonus! When the exams are over, we should all congregate somewhere to celebrate!
If you are interested in this idea, drop your thoughts in comments i.e. any suggestions on Rendezvous. Comment for the sake of resuscitating the blog and strengthening our BOH Community! ;)

Stu's Party
Just wanted to take this opportunity to thank Stewie on organising his 18th birthday houseparty. I'm sure i speak for all who managed to find the time to attend when i say that it was a great night, with plenty of good food, drink and music.
I also think Stu deserves kudos for inviting the entire BOH class, a daunting prospect!
The BOH party benchmark has been set... ;)

=) + =(
I know that after todays bio session we were all pretty shell shocke about next week's test and having little time to revise for it. In short term this is a hard hurdle to overcome but if you think in the long run...when it comes to the exam, we will have less to study for hence making it easier to at least pass. We should be thanking both sophie and Cathy for splitting the tested criteria hence making it easier for us. I hope everyone has a great time at stuarts birthday and that we get a bit of much needed study done =) + =(.
Ps for those who are unable to come to the dental pubcrawl, do not worry the people that are goin from our class will do our class proud..by drinking twice as much hahahahahaha Have a great weekend...

Exam Blues
the approaching exams are no doubt starting to play on everyone's mind by now, and I am certainly no exception. I think if u are getting a bit stressed thinking about the exams then it is not necessarily a bad thing. I think that a little worry is probably a healthy sign. However, I do not recommend stressing out and having a fit. Hopefully it means that u are at least thinking about doing some serious revision soon (if u have not already started) - especially on the areas that u know are hazy. Therefore, I think a little pre exam stress may actually work in favour (if used to its advantage) - rather being a defence mechanism against failing, a sign of your desire and will to succeed.
Well, true or not, I felt like sharing a thought that helps me deal with the stress in the back of my mind. It works for me, and I know feeling the pinch early is better than later because there is still plenty of time to revise and prepare! So listen to that voice inside your head and study, Study, STUDY!!! This is what I keep telling myself all along to phsyc myself up for revision!
So on that note, I will definitely put the study cap on this weekend and at get revising on some biology and some other selected areas of study. I thought I would also give the naturopath Ginkgo Biloba 2000 a go to see if it really helps with memory and enhances concentration as it claims. I researched some studies found on Pub Med and there seems to be links to suggest that it may work, but no real evidence yet. Anyway I thought I would give it a go and in time I will let u know my findings. Who knows, maybe I will get out of bed easier - LOL!

I actually missed Uni ! And its great to be back and catching up with everyone.
To the other Mum's in our class especially "CONGRATULATIONS" I think we are doing really well to jungle uni and family life. And if any of you ever need any one to chat to I'm alway's happy to. I know it can get very dificult at times with all the added stress that comes with being a Mum.
And Happy Mothers Day, lets hope we can take the day of !

Student Rep Meeting Review
not a great deal report on here. Susan and myself did attend a student representative meeting on Tuesday 24th at lunch time so i just thought i would update u all. The meeting had rep's from BDS 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th and fifth years but unfortunately Susan and myself were the only rep's attending in representation of BOH. If 2nd and third year BOH Reps were present there would most likely be more to report on. Apparently the BOH 2nd years were in clinical session. Not sure about the 3rd year reps though. I hope the next meeting will be a convenient time for all to attend.
Anyways, we raised a few topics and they were : Poor seating in the lab (occ health and safety), suggestion for another room to be made available for PBL sessions for quieter environment to optimize learning outcomes. There was also discussion of the need to have more lecturers in clinical practice. This discussion arising from the BDS students saying that they waste a great deal of time just waiting for lecturers to check the stages of their clinical work in the dental chair. I spoke on behalf of the BOH 2nd years agreeing with the need for more lecturers in clinical for better time management (BOH 2nd years spoke of this while doing our check ups at the beginning of the year and the issue was quite obvious really). Not a great deal else to report on, or that I can specifically remember at the moment.
Oh yes, of course - there was a free lunch including freshly made rolls with various fillings, a fruit platter and orange juice.
Hopefully the next rep meeting will be more productive with the attendance of BOH 2nd and 3rd years (providing the meeting is arranged to suit their rosters).

Semester 1b timetable
Hey guys, I've updated the timetable to semester 1b and posted on the class wiki, you can view it at http://bohone.wikispaces.com/1btimetable
It has all the old colours and can be viewed as a .bmp (I tried it as a jpg, but the text went a bit blurry) as well as the excel document (which contains the timetable in all the colours as well as the key for all the outlandish acronyms I invented to save space).

Sushi Train and Movie (300) Tuesday 17th
All BOH 1st years are welcome to come and join a fun night out on the town. Starting with a Sushi feast at the Gouger street 'Sushi Train' 630pm on Tuesday the 17th, and followed by a movie at the Academy Cinema. The chosen movie '300' - (due to popular demand) is scheduled to be screened at the Academy Theater 8:45 pm.
Ok, maybe its not the ideal 'chick flick' as there is a bit of violence and blood and guts so i hear, but an intelligent female source disclosed that there is a lot of muscle in the movie which made the film overall about an 8/10 LOL!!
Anyways, hope to see you out to have a good night!! The more the merrier!! Sushi will probably cost around $13 max for most people unless u intend on eating a horse......or a sea horse should i say hehe (not a sea lion). mmmmmm Sea horse (drooling) ok its getting late, forgive me.
The movie cost is $9 - thanks to Tight Tuesday.... Movie Munchies will obviously cost u extra!!
I look forward to seeing u there!!

Have a Safe and Happy Easter Holiday!
I hope u all have a very nice holiday. I am planning to do a few activities in the hollies like bowling(there are vouchers in the back of the uni diary), hiking (at Morialta Falls) waterfall gully was the other option but an intelligence source said that the recent rains have collapsed a few of the hiking tracks so it may be closed, i will check after the long week end.
Also on the cards was the idea of going out for a bite to eat at the Gouger street sushi bar one night and then catching a movie on the big screen. I was thinking 300 but i am open to suggestions so if anyone is interested in any of these activities then leave a comment and keep ur eye on this blog over the next few days for venue dates and times. If any particular day, night, time suits u best then please confirm.
Cheers to u all! Keep it safe and don't eat too much on Easter day, u know i will hehe
PS.. the pic is of Morialta Falls - i think- or Waterfall Gully... hmmm its one of them 2 (maybe u can tell me ;)
PPS. keep up the revision :)

Partay! great idea..
I have decided that as class rep I should finally do something..
As some of you may already know, next Thursday (yes the last day of uni before holidays) is NAOMI'S 18th birthday!!!
So it would be great if we could make it out that night to help her celebrate the big one eight and the fact that we've all made it through semester 1a.
Would be fantastic, tell me what you think we can try to figure something out, and remember public holiday next day, can sleep in as long as we want..

Human Biology (Keith's Teeth)
I was just wondering if the people in the Violet Group could meet up this Monday coming up, i was hoping if we could have a meeting. I did consider massaging all you guys but i don't have every ones numbers. I will mention this today or Friday. We all have to present the Keith's teeth on Tuesday so we really need to get organised. The sooner we all do this the better

General Studies Assignment
Since, i have done a thorough search through the Uni. of Adelaide library web site and found that this site is more than likely the site in which we should have been directed.
Please click the link evaluation criteria
At the moment Stu and I are planning to evaluate each of the articles separately and then compare them. we will only do the draft and do the reading until we're sure. Follow the format of the formative assessment.
But remember...... use your assessment guide and BOH 1st year handbook
PS this is a guide only... Stu and i reserve the right to be wrong and just thought this may help get us started on the draft while waiting for confirmation from Sue Gardner

General Studies- Course Material Listings???
Is anyone finding the General Studies (Course Material Listings) a bit confusing???
I noticed that the lecture postings and semester case study assignment 1 was for 2006??? as well as the evidence based dentistry 1 is for 2006???
Is there anyway of updating the content so that only material presented THIS YEAR is displayed?, I just wasted so much paper... :(

DHS DLP NOISE REDUCTION
Below is an email i have sent to Katrina regarding the issue of noise distraction in the DHS DLP sessions. It was nice to receive a prompt reply from Katrina to gain insight and understanding in relation to this matter. The reply is posted in the comments section of this post.
Hello Katrina,
As one of the BOH 1st year class representatives i thought i would express a concern that is negatively impacting the extent of possible learning outcomes in Friday's DLP sessions. It has come to my attention that two out of the three DHS DLP groups studying on Fridays are suffering from a bit of noise distraction from each other whilst participating in group discussions. It certainly does get noisy at the rear of the class where 2 groups (one of which i participate in) practically sit within meters of each other having group discussions. It seems a bit of a waste when we try to teach the rest of the group our 'hard researched' weekly topics only to be distracted by noise. The front of the room is no doubt a bit quieter being the only group down that end. So perhaps one extra small room (if available & close by) would solve the noise distraction levels and benefit our learning outcomes.
Is there any chance of this happening?
Thank you
Luke

Calendar
Everyone should be able to view it, but to edit you need to both have a google account (the same as what you need to contribute to this blog) as well as be added to the permissions list. As of now I have added everyone's university email to this list (in the form of firstname.lastname@adelaide.edu.au). If your email is different to this, or you used a different email to sign up to this blog, just email me your correct one and I'll add you when I get the chance (I check my email accounts daily).
This should be pretty awesome if it is kept up to date with everything, but I certainly can't do that on my own, so everyone: log on and start adding important BOH dates!
BTW, I think the calendar is best viewed in the month view (either click on the month tab at the top, or click on the name of the month on the left hand side)

hows everyone coping so far??? feels like the work is slowly piling on.....lets try keep on top of it early for example the infection control assignment, start gathering information now to make it easier in the long run. anyways its best i go now but get excited for our second clinic session tomorow...see you all

I think that we all need to be mindful that during lectures everybody is at different levels on knowledge and understanding. We need to be respectful of this. Taking and laughing during lecture is distracting for others. I know that we have all been guilty of this at one point or another. Put yourself in others shoes and think how you would feel. Just something for you to consider.
Cheers
Biology Blues
having worked with first year students in Hum Bio for a long time now, I can recognise that some of you are feeling a little out of your comfort zone. Keep asking questions in class, and keep up your reading - and re-reading. Sometimes what is confusing the first time around, is clearer when you read it for the 2nd or 3rd time. Make notes or draw diagrams as you go. I find reading the abstract or review of the chapter is a good way of revising.
I noticed in the tute this morning that some of you more experience in this field than others - try and find an experienced person in the group to have a coffee with (you may have to buy the coffee, but it will be worth it) and have a list of questions ready to go through with them.
Sites such as these are a good way of keeping the communication going.
Keep in touch

Hi and bye!!
I had a browse at the BOH 1 blog this morning (I had hoped it would be quick!) and whilst it's been really interesting reading all your thoughts and comments, I have decided it's too time consuming for me to manage the MyUni sites for the different streams/year levels/courses that I teach in (a Uni requirement that I must fulfil) and respond/add comments to the blog (optional for me!).
So I won't be participating in any discussions at this stage... if you have any queries or comments specific to D&HSc, please email directly to me.
However I have taken on board comments about noting updates to MyUni and will undertake to place a notice on Announcements to highlight whenever changes/additions are made to D&HSc.
I hope this helps a little - I can see that the process of communicating and transferring info is a very time consuming business for everyone!!!
All the best
Katrina

Who is Studious?
Starting out..
Ok so I've finally logged in! (what an example I'm setting already)
Just wanted to let you all know to please approach Luke and/or I and have a chat if you are having any difficulties.
We want to represent 1st year BOH to the best of our ability so please help us by always letting us know what's going on, good or bad..
A few people have already spoken to me about troubles they're having with biology, I know there are lots of people in our course that haven't done much, if any, biology before, so if you do feel that way I'm sure lots of others do as well.
Let's try to get on top of the problem before it becomes a major issue, even if it means extra study! And remember to utilise students in the course with a biology background, particularly tertiary transfer and school leavers who seem to have done a bit more..
Well i hope you all have a good long weekend, personally I'll be playing softball and working, not much partying :(
And of course I'll be studying!
Oh and I have a myspace at www.myspace.com/susanclift and msn at susanclift@hotmail.com (very original aren't I?)
See you all bright and early Tuesday morning!
Susan :) (sorry it ended up so long, unintentional)

Timetable
**Updated 9/3 at 3.03 (fixed the link - it should now download just by clicking it)
**Updated 9/3 at 2.55 (implemented Sophie's corrections)
This is kind of a spin off from the post Nikki started, but I think it will be easier to manage edits and updates if it has it's own post (as you cannon edit comments).
Just to fill everyone in, a lot of us are having a bit of trouble with the time table that we were given on day one, mainly because of all the alterations we've been given and the rather static nature of physical paper (one piece can only handle so many edits). The (hopeful) solution is to maintain a regularly updated one online.
Just to let everybody know how I arrived at this (probably-not-so-correct) timetable, I entered in all of the times from the original timetable (that we were given on our very first day) and then attempted to change all the classes to those published in our student handbook (on the assumption that it's more recent date of publication would make it more correct). There were a few clashes, including Monday's clinical practice time (as published in the handbook) completely overlapping the following general studies class. I have since made a few alterations based on the recommendations of our our esteemed male class rep and have also decided to remover the multi-colour support whilst still in the editing phase (its just too much extra work, and if people really want the different colours they can use the font colour button on the format bar of excel)
Anyway I'm having quite a bit of trouble ironing out the creases, so any posts regarding corrections would be greatly appreciated (I'll try and add them on an almost daily basis)
Anyway here is the link:
sem1att.xls
**Disclaimer: please note that, while every attempt has been made to get this correct, it is more likely than not that I screwed it up badly. At the moment I believe the start times for each day to be accurate, as well as the finishing times for Monday-Thursday.
Congratulations!
Just wanna say congratulations to both Susan and Luke for making class reps.
No pressure guys! ;) Haha!
Finally!
Our course so far has ben heaps of fun! It's also been incredibly daunting! Im not sure about anyone else, but my timetable appears very confusing! I'm not sure if it is possible, but are we able to get our hands on an ammended timetable with all the additions and changes fixed up on it? My pencil marks are getting very messy!
Also, if anyone is having any trobules with the bio or chem in Human Biology, I still have my books from year 12 which I'm happy for people to borrow or have a look at. They give a very simple explaination of whats going on and build up from there. (I have some workbooks too so you can test yourself along the way) Let me know and I'll be happy to bring them in.
Well, I'll see you all tomorrow, and if I forget, have a fantastic long weekend! - STAY HEALTHY!
Human Biology 'Catch Up' Lesson 26/03 11am
So far there are around 11 people are attending. Please bring some questions for Sophie along to the session. If u would like to attend and have not yet confirmed your attendance can u please let Susan Clift or myself Luke Knolder know asap so Sophie is aware of numbers attending. Thank you.
Also, please feel welcome to approach your class reps re. any matters, we will do our very best to help! We are truly honored, and on behalf of Susan and myself, thank you.

Sweat may spread Hepatitis B virus
It was on The Age newspaper yesterday.
Sweat may spread hepatitis B virus
Findings from a study of Olympic wrestlers indicate that hepatitis B virus is found in the sweat of infected individuals, and so sweating might be a way that the virus could be passed between participants in contact sports.
Bleeding wounds and mucous membranes have been implicated in hepatitis B transmission during contact sports, but until now no study had looked to see if sweat carries the virus.
Dr S Bereket-Yucel, from Celal Bayar University in Izmir, Turkey, tested for DNA of the hepatitis B virus in blood and sweat samples from 70 male Olympic wrestlers.
The results indicated that nine (13 per cent) of the wrestlers had the hepatitis B virus in their blood.
However, these were deemed "occult" infections because no antibodies to the virus were detected in any of the wrestlers, according to the investigators' report ahead of print by the British Journal of Sports Medicine.
In eight of the nine participants whose blood tested positive, DNA for hepatitis B was also detected in sweat.
Based on these results, "Evidence is emerging that the incidence of occult HBV in Olympic wrestling is higher than expected and that transmission of HBV may also occur through sweat," the researcher concludes.
"The advice of sports organisations about HBV testing should be changed," they recommend, "making it obligatory for all participants involved in contact sports and playing under adult rules to be vaccinated against hepatitis B."

Basement Party 1
Anyway I reckon it would be great if more of us could rock up for the next basement party. It would be a great chance to socialise with each other and strengthen our BOH Learning Community.
I know the timing for this one was less than optimal (4hours after the conclusion of our last lecture), but for future parties we should all be able walk straight there after general studies.

Please accept my invitation to contribute to our community blog where we can raise and discuss issues, celebrate achievements and share our knowledge and experiences. I look forward to your postings and am very excited about developing our networks and friendships. Please remember the Ubuntu philosophy that we have adopted as our Guiding Principle for our community development::
"A person with ubuntu is open and available to others, affirming of others, does not feel threatened that others are able and good, for he or she has a proper self-assurance that comes from knowing that he or she belongs in a greater whole."
